The Power of Disruption

I am the child of a Civil Rights Leader who had me on a picket line when I was six years old, boycotting the lack of “Negro” workers at the local five-and-dime store. I would never understand how impactful that was until years later.

Recently, the United Healthcare Medicare Prescription Plan had the audacity to double my premiums without any explanation. I called, not once but twice, to get an answer and was given nothing but a litany of excuses. The first representative, a young man who fully understood my frustration, quickly escalated the call to his supervisor. That was excellent discernment on his part.

On the other hand, his supervisor unsuccessfully attempted to explain her company’s corporate greed.

“Does the new Plan offer any additional services?” I asked.

“No.”

“Well, then, why increase the rates? I’m only taking anti-hypertension medication. Gratefully, I’m not on anything worse, like chemotherapy.”

The rep explained that “everyone was complaining.”

Realizing this was another disrespectful example of corporate greed, I demanded that they immediately stop autopayment for my premiums. If this company didn’t respect me enough to explain why my premiums were doubled, they didn’t deserve immediate access to my money.

I dream of the day when people will understand the power that lies within and use it at its highest level. If millions of people as frustrated as I am stopped auto-paying their premiums, this would disrupt United Healthcare’s cash flow and quarterly multi-billion dollar profits.

Sometimes, you just have to go there.
